Matt's Top 100 Movies: 61-70 Trailers

Welcome back to the blog. If you haven't yet read the latest list of ten movies on my top 100, just click here. I think it may be the least controversial list yet, which is a good and bad thing. Good because the less people feel the need to hate on my picks. bad though because that means less comments/feedback on the blog. But eh, I'll deal with it.

Like every week, Luke has posted his list as well, which can be found here. An interesting mix to say the least. But of course, you clicked on this to see some trailers. As usual, I will rank them from at the bottom with the ultimate goal to find the best trailers among my top 100 movies. Luke will do the same on his blog later this week and then both of us will post reactions to each other's list. In other words, plenty of free entertainment and good reading for you all week long. You're welcome.

#70 Home Alone

My Take: Solid trailer. You know the plot and you get to see some of the madness that ensues during the break-in and even during his mom's trip back to find Kevin. I really love the grocery store scene. Not a central part of the movie by any means but gives you an idea of the maturity of Kevin at just 8 years old, which is something I admired when watching this movie when I was that age.

#69 Casino Royale

My Take: No lie, the Bond theme alone gets me excited. It just has that effect on me after watching all the Bond movies I have. I like this one because I think it does a good job of showcasing the new (and improved) Bond to an audience skeptical of Daniel Craig as the leading man. You get a feel for his cockiness but also his vulnerability. Ladies like the shirtless body scene while guys will go for the badass beginning. All in all, gets the job done.

#68 Toy Story

My Take: I like this trailer but I don't love it. As a kid, I probably did love it because of two things: It looked different than the other Disney movies and also the idea of toys coming to life. But knowing the movie, not real sure if this really grabbed me. Missed a lot of great lines I think but at the same time, got across the theme of the movie.

#67 Mission: Impossible

My Take: This trailer is crazy disjointed, but so is the movie so I guess that's okay. It is just a mix of scene after scene of something blowing up, falling, or close calls to death. I just don't know if it told me anything. I have to remember though that older people knew the TV series and probably didn't need to see much in the trailer to know what the movie would be about. It was the clueless kid like me that would just look at that trailer with a befuddled but intrigued look.

66. Taken

My Take: This trailer wins for maybe best line: "I will find you...and I will kill you." Of course, followed by the creepy "Good Luck". Talk about the perfect way to end a trailer and leave the audience on the edge of your seat. It gives away none of the movie really besides the beginning. Big fan of this trailer. Really suspenseful and more than enough to make me wanna see this movie.

65. American Pie

My Take: Having seen the movie, I think this does a good job of getting everything you need. But if I had not seen the movie, I would have really loved this trailer. Of course, this is geared toward a certain audience, not all. But that target audience would eat this up. It shows each and every character and how different they are all, immediately giving all of us someone we can relate to. And of course, Eugene Levy is prominent in the trailer, as he should be.

64. Aladdin

My Take: I love this movie but I hate this trailer. The only reason: the narrator. Seriously, let the dialogue/action tell the story. I don't need a narrator telling me what is going on from start to finish. It was incredibly annoying. I do appreciate the addition of the music, but while those are quality songs, you don't know that yet in the trailer. The small snippets are good for me but for newbies, probably just eh.

63. 300

My Take: Much like Taken, I love this trailer for not what it tells/shows you, but for what it does not. You'll notice, they don't show much fighting. They don't give away much about any of the brilliant strategy by the Spartans. To me, that's what makes the movie. This trailer gives you enough action to want to see the movie without giving the movie away.

62. The Fast and the Furious

My Take: Solid trailer, despite the crappy quality. Sorry about that. Regardless, it hits everything you need to know about the movie. There are fast cars. There is a love story. There is a plot that thickens as the movie goes on. And most importantly, there is bad acting, but again, that makes the movie fun. I know this trailer made me want to see the movie 10 years ago and I feel the same way now. Extra points for the Limp Bizkit classic "My Way" too.

61. Titanic

My Take: It just seems fitting that the longest movie on my list has the longest trailer thus far. Nearly 4 minutes long! With that said, it is a very good trailer. It touches on all the important parts you need to know and in just the trailer alone, you understand the dynamic between Jack and Rose. What I don't think I like though is that the trailer pretty much is a 4 minute version of the movie an less of a tease. I don't like mini-movie trailers but again, this movie is so long and so good that in this case, I don't hate it that much.

Alright, so there they are. If I had to put these in order, and I kind of do since I said I would, I would rank them this way:

1. Taken
2. American Pie
3. 300
4. Casino Royale
5. Home Alone
6. The Fast and the Furious
7. Titanic
8. Toy Story
9. Mission: Impossible
10. Aladdin

So there you have it. Make sure you check back soon for my reaction to Luke's latest list. And then of course, next week (Monday or Tuesday) for my movies 51-60 as we near the halfway point. Thanks for reading/watching!
